Everybody's Got A Pistol...

GUN - Gil-Scott Heron
Jesse James - Scarface

Let's not hide behind the facts: America has a love affair with guns. Yeah, a love affair. We love our guns. We hold 'em. We polish 'em. We take 'em out when no ones looking. We fantasize about our prowess with our steel. We talk to our friends about 'em. Our wives hate 'em. A love affair.

Of course, our laws are merely a reflection of this love affair. Did you know that terrorist suspects can purchase a gun in this country? As long as you have not been found to "have been engaged in conduct constituting, in preparation for, in aid of, or related to terrorism,” that automatic weapon is YOURS. How did you get on that terrorist list in the first place? Nevermind, here's your gun.

Did you know that up until YESTERDAY, people with a history of involuntary mental health treatment could purchase a gun in Virginia? Don't you just love RETROACTIVE politics? People died at the hands of a mentally ill man with a gun. Next up on our agenda: preventing mentally ill men from purchasing a gun.

What happened to anticipatory politics? What happened to vision?

Don't even get me started on rappers and their love affairs with their guns. Two words: no homo.

I heard this story by David Sedaris where he's talking about how in Michigan (I think...) you can get a gun and a hunting license even if you're BLIND. Forget mentally ill, I'm worried about the folks who can't see where they're shooting.
